Summer Eights Day Four

Yesterday saw the exciting climax of four days racing and the end of a years hard training for the Mansfield crews. Results as follows:

M1 were unlucky to be bumped by St Peters coming into the gut. A real shame on the last day, but with 6 freshers in the boat there’s plenty to be optimistic about going into next year. They finish at the head of Div 3.

W1 rowed over, twice infact, crossing the finish line in splendid isolation on both occasions as crews sound them bumped out. A very respectable end to the week after a difficult start, particularly given the all new first boat line up compared to last years Eights. They also finish head of Div 3.

M2 were bumped by St John’s III to finish eighth in Div 6. Again a solid performance from a novice boat, with many intending to carry on rowing into next year.

Many thanks to all who came down to support over the past four days. It meant so much to have support from the boathouse as the crews rowed past, and particular thanks must go to those who braved torrential rain yesterday afternoon to offer their support. Thanks also to our coaches, Lucy and Dan, our two captains, Camilla and Ash, and all the MCBC committee for ensuring another successful year for Mansfield on the Isis. Special mention must go to Isobel Plant and Jo Williams for organising a spectacular Eights Dinner yesterday evening, attended by current crews, alumni, parents and friends - a fitting end to a very enjoyable year.

Summer Eights Day Three

Fortunes were again mixed, but somewhat reversed and Mansfield battled once again on the Isis.

M1 were bumped by Christ Church II, a very strong crew, and so will chase Christ Church at the foot of Div 2 at 4.45 tomorrow.

W1 bumped Brasenose straight off the start, and then rowed over at sandwich boat in Div 2. They race again atey race at 3.05 tomorrow, and then hopefully again at 4.15 chasing St Hughs.

M2 were bumped by St Hildas - again a very strong first boat quickly making its way up through the divisions. They chase Hildas in Div 6 at 12.10 tomorrow.

Please note all start times are one hour earlier tomorrow to allow all to get ready for Eights Dinner. There will be Pimms, there will be barbeques, the Entz reps even promise me there will be free food and drink for Mansfielders, so make sure you come down to the boathouse to cheer on the crews on the final day.

Summer Eights Day Two

Another day of mixed fortunes at the river today, with all still putting up a very respectable performance.

M1 rowed over in Div 2, and will chase St Annes again tomorrow at 5.45. Fingers crossed on catching them the second time around.

W1 were again unlucky to be bumped by St Hughs at the end of Boathouse Island. The girls put up an extremely good fight for almost all the length of the course, but were caught just before the finish. They chase Brasenose in Div 3 at 4.05 tomorrow, and, if they bump in the first race, will race again at 5.15 at the foot of Div 2.

M2 suffered an unfortunate equipment failure when their bow ball fell off just at the start of racing, thus preventing them from taking part. As a result, they were penalty bumped by LMH II and will race again tomorrow chasing LMH in Div 6 at 1.10.

Today saw more supporters down at the river than Wednesday - let’s try and increase numbers again for tomorrow. Forecasts indicate blue skies, and there’s little excuse for not indulging in Pimms and an icecream at the boathouse and cheering on the Mansfield crews. It just might make all the difference.

Summer Eights Day One

It was a day of mixed fortunes at the river today and Mansfiedl commenced theit offensive in this years Eights.

M1 bumped Brasenose at the exit of the Gut, and so chase St Annes tomorrow in Div 2 at 5.45

W1 very very unlucky to be bumped by Worcester - a crew well known to be one of the best on the river this year and who came from 3 places behind to gain the bump. They race at the head of Div 3 at 4.05 tomorrow, and then hopefully again in Div 2 at 5.15.

M2 successfully rowed over in Div 6, and will chase Jesus III again tomorrow at 1.10.

Thanks so much to all who came down to the river today. It really means a lot to have support on the bank. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

M2 Qualify for Eights

Mansfield M2 rowed on in style yesterday, setting a very respectable time of 3.05 and qualifying for the main regatta event. In all probability, M2 will race in the position they finished last year - 4th in Mens Div 6, and will be racing at 1.10 for each day of Summer Eights.

Congratualations to all involved.

Summer Eights

Today and next week sees the start of Oxford’s most famous rowing regatta. Make sure you come down to the river at some point to support the Mansfield boats, and to make the most of pimms, barbecues and beautiful weather.

M2 race in Rowing On today to qualify for the main event. The boys will be racing at 3.50 today and would be greateful for support from the bank. The time they set today will determine whether or not they can race next week, so it really does matter!

From Wednesday to Saturday next week M1, W1 and hopefully M2 will be chasing crews down the Isis, hoping to build on Mansfield’s success over previous years.

M1 race in Mens Div 2 at 5.45

W1 race in Women’s Div 2 at 5.15

See you down at the river next week!

Summer Eights Dinner

As practice resumes on the Isis in preparation for another term of Mansfield glory, there is also news relating to the more social side of rowing festivities in the form of a message from our esteemed Social Secretary…

“Summer is here! And that can only mean one thing - Summer VIIIs. Days spent rowing happily in the sunshine (no more cold, rainy mornings) and the prospect of an excellent rowing competition 5th week. After you have relaxed with Pimm’s by the boat house, the only way to celebrate rowing success is Summer VIII’s Dinner… Champagne reception outside the chapel followed by a 4 course meal (see menu below) and port with chocolates to finish. Perfection. The meal is £25 for students and £30 for guests. This is a great opportunity for parents, relatives and loved ones to experience a Mansfield formal so please invite whoever you wish.

MENU

Parsnip & Lemon soup
Asparagus with Hollandaise sauce
Rack of Lamb with Jersey Potatoes, Creamed Leeks & Baby Carrots
(VEG OPTION) Red Onion & Goats Cheese Tart
Baked Cheesecake with Berry Compote
